Caravaggio in Rome

Journey through History and Art

The Borghese Contemporary Hotel, located at Largo della Fontanella di Borghese 84, stands close to one of the most significant sites associated with the figure of Caravaggio, pseudonym of Michelangelo Merisi. Caravaggio, famous for his revolutionary style, was in Rome from 1594 to 1606.

The city of Rome preserves some of his most extraordinary works, which tell of his vision of art and light. From here, you can take a fascinating walking tour to discover the churches that house his masterpieces.

A walking tour in the footsteps of Caravaggio:

La Bottega

Start your walk from the Borghese Contemporary Hotel at Largo della Fontanella di Borghese 84. From here, head towards Vicolo della Torretta where he worked at the Bottega.

The artist had the opportunity in 1592 to work at the Bottega del Cavalier d'Arpino owned by the painter Giuseppe Cesari. The workshop was located in Vicolo della Torretta, 50 metres from the Borghese Contemporary Hotel.

Imagine the artist at work in his youthful years, in this charming corner of the city. Due to a brief illness, Caravaggio was hospitalised at the Consolazione hospital, thus severing his relationship with Cesari. During this period, Caravaggio was probably employed as an executor of still lifes and decorative parts of more complex works, but there is no certain evidence of this.
